BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Four students with special needs will represent Brunei in the coming Global IT Challenge (GITC) Competition for Youths with Disabilities from November 21 to 25 in China.

As a step to identify the potential candidates for the regional competition, the Special Education Unit at Brunei's Ministry of Education organised the first Local IT Challenge (LITC), according to a local report.

Seventeen local students with special needs from nine government secondary schools participated in the LITC, which was held from June 16 to 22.

The students took part in five categories, including the e-Tools Challenge: Microsoft Excel; e-Tools Challenge: Microsoft PowerPoint; e-Life Map Challenge; e-Design Challenge and e-Creativity Challenge.

The chairperson of the LITC award ceremony, Ali Yusri Abdul Ghafor, said that since 2013, Brunei has sent 10 special needs students to take part in the GITC, where Brunei managed to take home one gold, six silver and three bronze medals.

"This year, four special needs students will represent Brunei. These students were chosen based on their overall results in the LITC and other criteria set by the organisers," said Ali Yusri, who is also the acting head of the Special Education Unit.

The annual GITC will take place in Jiangsu Province, China.

Other than identifying the local representatives for the regional competition, Ali Yusri said the LITC competition also aims to help special needs students become digitally literate and obtain 21st century skills. He hopes the LITC will be held annually for special needs students in Brunei.
