The Belt and Road Shanghai Summer Study Project is funded by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission (SHMEC) to support the exchange of educational ideas and experiences between education administrators, school principals and teachers, and researchers from the Belt and Road countries via providing a platform in Shanghai Normal University (SHNU). SHMEC and Shanghai People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (SPAFFC) will guide the fulfillment of this Project, which will last three weeks and enroll 20 candidates internationally.

Information for the Project organization and candidate recruitment goes as below. (1) The International Affairs Office and the Research Institute for International and Comparative Education (RIICE) in SHNU set up the schedule, content, candidate selection procedure and forms of organization for this Project. (2) SHMEC and SPAFFC send invitation letter to sister and related cities of Shanghai. (3) SHMEC, SPAFFC and SHNU select jointly the candidates from applicants.

2. Introduction to SHNU and RIICE

Founded in 1954, SHNU is a comprehensive local university with salient features of teacher training and particular strength in liberal arts. SHNU is abundant in teaching resources. For more than 60 years since the founding of the University, SHNU has cultivated 200,000 talents of various domains, and almost 70 percent of teachers and headmasters of the primary and secondary schools in Shanghai are SHNU alumni. SHNU boasts a high-quality academic staff of 2,915 teachers and researchers, including 1,831 full-time teachers, among which there are 300 professors (or equivalents) and 667 associate professors (or equivalents). Located in the metropolis Shanghai, SHNU boasts special features and strength in international cooperation and exchanges. By March 2016, the University has established links with 311 universities and educational institutions in 40 countries and regions, including Harvard University, Waseda University, French National Academy of Science, Brazil National Academy of Science, etc. Every year, more than 2,000 foreign students choose to study in SHNU, and a large number of SHNU teachers and students visit and study in universities abroad.

RIICE is an important branch of SHNU and the University Think Tank of Shanghai Municipal Government for Global City Education. Also, RIICE was conferred by the Chinese Ministry of Education (MOE) the titles of the MOE International Education Research and Consultation Center Education Policy Research Unit in 2011 and of the MOE Base for International Education Studies in 2012. Currently, RIICE has 7 full-time researchers, with 3 professors and 30 part-time researchers, with 21 professors. For each year, RIICE enrolls 3-4 doctoral students and 10 master students. The main research fields of RIICE are international comparative studies of educational policies, practices and thoughts, specifically in teacher education, curriculum development, and global urban education, and recently China education in a global perspective.

3. Basic conditions and previous works

Supported by other departments in SHNU, RIICE has undertaken a series of international teacher training and exchange projects. From 2014 to 2017, RIICE runs the England-Shanghai Mathematics Teacher Exchange Project in each year via completing the training for England teachers and the selection of Shanghai teachers. In May 2016, RIICE hosted the Global Conference on Equity and Excellence in Basic Education supported by the World Bank. Administers, educators, and researchers from Shanghai Municipal Government, universities and schools shared the “Shanghai secrets” in basic education with more than 100 educational administers from over 30 countries in this conference.
