Secretary-General of ASEAN-China Centre Attended the International Conference on Belt & Road Initiative Lancang-Mekong Cooperation

On 19 November 2018, the opening ceremony of the 2ndInternational Conference on Belt & Road Initiative Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Mr. Chen Dehai, Secretary-General of ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) was invited to attend the ceremony and deliver remarks. Mr. Ren Yisheng, Consul General of China in Chiang Mai, Prof. Emeritus Kasem Watanachiai, Chairman of Chiang Mai University Council and Privy Councillor and Mr. Prajuab Kantiya, Deputy Governor of Chiang Mai Province were present.

Prof. Emeritus Kasem Watanachiai said that Belt and Road Initiative is an epoch-making initiative for promoting peace and development. The conference would provide a platform for scholars and researchers of China, Thailand and other Mekong River countries to share innovative ideas, strengthen exchanges and cooperation and promote regional prosperity.

Mr. Ren Yisheng said that the Belt and Road Initiative is developing from vision to reality. Lancang-Mekong Cooperation has become one of the most vibrant and promising mechanisms in the sub-region with a bright future. China will contribute Chinese wisdom and proposals to the sub-regional governance, and will be a trust-worthy partner with Mekong River countries.

Mr. Prajuab Kantiya said that the Belt and Road Initiative has gained great attention all over the world. Under the initiative, ASEAN countries are making efforts to establish closer ties. As an important province with key position in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is ready to seize the new opportunity to actively participate in LMC construction.

Secretary-General Chen Dehai said that in the past five years, the Belt and Road Initiative had been translated from vision to action by striving to make progress, seeking improvement and growing through cooperation. The BRI has provided the world's largest platform for international cooperation and become a public product welcomed by various sides. It is our shared goal to advance the building of the Belt and Road, deepen ASEAN-China strategic partnership and build an ASEAN-China community with shared future. As an important sub-regional cooperation mechanism, LMC mechanism will promote ASEAN community building and regional integration. ACC will work alongside with all parties concerned to make new contributions to the building of the Belt and Road and ASEAN-China friendship and cooperation.

The Conference was co-organized by the Consulate-General of China in Chiang Mai together with Chiang Mai University and Mae Fah Luang University. It brought together 500 participants, including officials from Chinese and Thai governments, diplomats, representatives from international organizations, scholars, researchers and entrepreneurs.
