From 2 to 4 November 2019, the 35th ASEAN Summit, the 22nd ASEAN-China Summit, the 22nd ASEAN Plus China, Japan and ROK Summit and the 14th East Asia Summit were held in Bangkok, Thailand. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-Cha of Thailand, the ASEAN Chair, hosted a Gala dinner in honour of delegations from different countries on 3 December. AMS leaders and representatives of participating countries joined the opening ceremony and the Gala Dinner. ACC Secretary-General Chen Dehai was present upon invitation.

Prime Minister Prayut stated in the opening remarks that ASEAN integration and practical cooperation have reaped new progress in 2019. Yet ASEAN Member States are confronted with challenges brought by world economic downturn, geopolitical conflicts, climate change, environmental degradation and transnational organized crimes. ASEAN Member States must uphold ASEAN centrality, strengthen solidarity, and join hands with partners beyond the region and the rest of the international community to cope with those challenges in a collective way. ASEAM Member States should jointly safeguard regional peace and stability under the principle of mutual respect, mutual trust and mutual benefit. At the same time, efforts must be made to maintain the momentum of economic growth, complete the negotiation on the Regional Economic Comprehensive Partnership at an early date, and push forward the people-to-people, financial and digital connectivity. By doing so, the ASEAN Member States are laying down a solid foundation for building a people-centred ASEAN community that looks to the future.

This is the first time that such invitation has been extended to the ASEAN-China Centre. Secretary-General Chen Dehai had extensive exchange of views with ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi and the representatives from ASEAN Member States on how to further deepen cooperation and exchanges.
