ACC Representatives Participated in the 2020 East Asia Summit New Energy Forum

On 24 September 2020, the 2020 East Asia Summit New Energy Forum was held in Shanghai. The Forum was co-hosted by the Department of International Cooperation of Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology and Science and Technology Department of Yunnan Province. Representatives of ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) were invited to attend the forum online.
Mr. Ruan Xiangping, director general-level official of the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, and Mr. Xie Wenlan, Deputy Director General of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Representatives from science and technology and energy authorities, research institutions, higher education institutions, and enterprises from China and ASEAN countries including Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, as well as those from India, Japan, ROK, New Zealand, Russia, the United States etc. attended the forum online. Representatives from international organizations and media also attended the forum.
 
At the opening ceremony, Mr. Ruan Xiangping said that, as climate change requires global response, green development and sustainable development have drawn attention worldwide. Taking the development of new and renewable energy as a long-term development strategy, the Chinese government is ready to work with East Asian countries to seize the opportunity of BRI international cooperation and jointly promote policy exchanges, innovation cooperation and commercialization of the outcomes of science and technology in the field of new energy to advance regional sustainable development.
 
Mr. Xie Wenlan shared Shanghai's experience in executing its science and technology innovation strategy, including its efforts to make breakthrough in core technologies that are applied to promote green, circular, and low-carbon development. Shanghai is actively engaged in in-depth scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation with East Asian countries and other countries along the  routes of BRI, promoting scientific and technological people-to-people exchanges, and building joint laboratories. Shanghai hopes to further strengthen international scientific and technological cooperation and exchanges with East Asian countries in the fields of new energy through cooperation with Yunnan and other provinces, and create a "technological community" of equality, mutual benefit, and win-win cooperation.
 
At the forum, experts and scholars from research institutions in China, Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand and the United States shared their research results and practical experience.
 
The theme of this forum is "The Mission and Future of New Energy to Address the Challenge of Climate Change". During the one-day event, experts and scholars opened parallel forums on the research and development of new energy technologies and products, research results, and policy recommendations, and conducted in-depth discussions on current and future development trends, cooperation models, and innovation-driven development.
