On 30 June – 1 July 2015, ASEAN media journalists, led by Mr. Huang Yulong, Assistant President of China Report, and Ms. Lada Phumas, Director of Information and Public Relations Division (IPRD) of ASEAN-China Centre (ACC), visited Shantou as their first stop in Guangdong Province.

Mr. Zhou Zhensong, Member of the CPC Standing Committee and Director of Publicity of Shantou City, met the delegation and briefed on the current economic and social development as well as future prospect of Shantou City in cooperating with ASEAN countries. The ASEAN media interviewed the Administrative Committee of the Pilot Area of Overseas Chinese Economic and Cultural Cooperation in Shantou and had a site visit to the Pilot Experimental Zone, which served as a platform of the common development for the overseas Chinese and a gateway for building the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road" as a part of “One Belt One Road” initiative. Through the dialogue with the media, Shantou expressed its readiness to work closely with ASEAN countries and welcomed the investment from ASEAN.

The delegation also visited Guangdong Chaozhou (Teochew) Opera Company and Museum to learn about the history and development of Teochew Opera, which had been disseminated to the different parts of China and to Southeast Asian countries. The media delegates conducted the interviews with Mr. Xie Jishun, Vice President of the 2nd Group of Guangdong Teochew Opera, a particular aspect of which they were interested in was how Teochew Opera be integrated into Southeast Asian community and Teochew’s role in relation to “One Belt One Road” initiative. The media delegation watched a performance of the famous Teochew Opera with enthusiasm. This illustrated ASEAN and China had been integrated in culture with diversified local characteristics and culture had been an important ingredient to link the peoples of China with ASEAN.

Upon an arrival in Shantou, Director Lada Phumas of IPRD ACC received a joint interview by 8 local media agencies, namely China News Agency, Nanfang Daily, Shantou Daily, Shantou Metropolitan News, Shantou TV, Shantou Special Economic Zone Evening Post, Guangzhou Daily and Ta Kung Pao (Hong Kong). Shantou is famous for being hometown of 3.4 million overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia. It has close affiliation with the overseas Chinese in ASEAN and has bright prospect for win-win cooperation.  This is the first time a group of 10 ASEAN journalists from nine-country media agencies visited Shantou. Through the “Reporting Trip”, it was hoped that Shantou would be known more by the general public in ASEAN.

The ASEAN media delegates left Guangzhou on 2 July 2015 back to their respective ASEAN countries.
