ACC Secretary-General Participated in the 3rd China-ASEAN Vocational Education Exhibition and Forum

On 18 September 2015, co-hosted by the Ministry of Education of China and the Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China, co-organized by Guangxi Education Department and ASEAN-China Centre (ACC), the 3rd China-ASEAN Vocational Education Exhibition and Forum was inaugurated in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The theme of the event was "Cultivating Vocational Professionals Hand-in-hand", which was one of the main activities during the 12th China-ASEAN Expo. Mme. Lu Xin, Vice Minister of Education of China, Mme. Li Kang, Vice Governor of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China, Mme. Yang Xiuping, Secretary-General of ACC, Mr. Im Koch, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Education of Cambodia, Mr. Sisamone Sithirajvongsa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education of Laos, Mr. Soe Win, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education of Myanmar, Mr. Pham Manh Hung, Vice Minister of Education of Vietnam, and Mr. Abel da Costa Freitas Ximenes, Vice Minister of Education of Timor-Leste, participated in the event and delivered their remarks. Representatives from the Ministries of education and 260 representatives from 80 universities and colleges of ASEAN Member States, as well as more than 200 participants from almost a hundred colleges from China mainland attended the event. Representatives from UK, South Korea, New Zealand, as well as Chinese Hong Kong and Chinese Taiwan were also among the participants.

Vice Minister Mme. Lu Xin in her remarks said that Chinese government has been paying high attention to vocational education, and introduced the process of reform and development on Chinese vocational education in recent years from basic form of modern vocational education system with Chinese characteristics, the education structure was more scientific and reasonable, production and education integration, improvement of school-enterprise cooperation, enhancement of quality of skilled talents, improvement of basic system and environment. Vice Governor Mme. Li Kang in her speech introduced the exploration and practice of developing modern vocational education in Guangxi.

In her remarks, Secretary-General Yang Xiuping said that Vocational education was an important component of national education system and human resource development and was of great significance to a country and an individual. Today, ASEAN countries were in the important juncture of social and economic development, whereby qualified talents were in high demand in every sector. China-ASEAN education collaboration had vast potentials. Strengthening China-ASEAN vocational education cooperation would benefit both sides in the ASEAN Community building through enhanced mutual benefit and win-win cooperation. Secretary-General Yang briefed ACC’s role and function, especially in the field of vocational education cooperation, which had facilitated intercollegiate cooperation between hundreds of vocational education colleges from ASEAN countries and China. She also stated that 2016 would mark the 25th anniversary of ASEAN-China dialogue relations and China proposed to designate Year 2016 as the ASEAN-China Education Exchange Year, and that ASEAN-China cooperation would have greater potential and brighter prospects. ACC would continue to support the mechanism under ASEAN-China vocational education exhibition and forum, intensifying its efforts to promote functional cooperation in the field of education, hence, contributing to the deepening of the development of China-ASEAN Strategic Partnership.

Representatives from the Ministries of Education of ASEAN Member States introduced the development and reform of vocational education in their respective countries,and expressed that Chinese vocational education was an important reference to ASEAN countries, and that strengthening China-ASEAN vocational education cooperation would benefit the ASEAN Community building, thus, promoting ASEAN-China common development and mutual benefit.

After the Forum, Secretary-General Yang and other guests of honour were entertained by art performances presented by foreign students in Guangxi colleges, and gained a better understanding of the education exchange between Guangxi and ASEAN countries.
