ACC Secretary-General Attended the Jiangsu-ASEAN Education Cooperation Dialogue

On 7 November 2016, Jiangsu-ASEAN Education Cooperation Dialogue was held in Wuxi. Director-General of Jiangsu Provincial Education Department Mr. Shen Jian, Secretary-General of ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) H.E. Mme. Yang Xiuping, Director of the Secretariat of Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Dr. Gatot and Vice Mayor of Wuxi Municipal People's Government Ms. Hua Boya attended the Opening Ceremony and delivered speeches.

Secretary-General Yang Xiuping cited that education was concerned with every country and individual. In the context of the rapid development of ASEAN-China relations, all sectors were in urgent need of professional and technical personnel. To strengthen education exchanges between China and ASEAN was not only conducive to economic and social development, but would also bring tangible benefits to the peoples. Jiangsu province had rich educational resources and the level of education were among the top of the country. In recent years, Jiangsu Province, SEAMEO, and ACC had close cooperation and actively carried out education exchanges and cooperation with Southeast Asian countries. As an inter-governmental organization between ASEAN countries and China, ACC actively supported the "double 100,000 student mobility plan", gave full play to its strengths, and collaborated with government departments, educational institutions and regional partners to build platforms and network, which enabled more than 400 vocational education institutions between ASEAN and China to sign MoUs for future cooperation. Thus, the delegates would take this opportunity to speak freely, explore new mode of education cooperation to achieve mutual benefit.

Vice Mayor Ms. Hua Boya pointed out that the internationalization of education was a must for the modernization of education. In the background of the Belt and Road initiative, Wuxi city took education opening up as the driving force of reform and opening up. It had established friendly and cooperative relations with schools in Asia, Europe, North America, and other regions. In addition, it had carried out various forms of education cooperation with ASEAN countries so as to formulate a sound basis for international education cooperation. She hoped that this meeting would provide a new platform for Jiangsu-ASEAN cooperation in areas of preliminary and higher education, increase enrollment of vocational institutes, actively expand the channels of cooperation, and open up a new window in education cooperation as well as benefit sharing.

Director Gatot briefed on the work of SEAMEO, and spoke positively on relevant cooperation projects carried out with ACC and Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education as well as the progress of the work. He hoped that participants from ASEAN countries could make full use of the dialogue to learn from the advanced education concept, good service and administration of schools in Jiangsu, to further expand in-depth exchanges and cooperation with Jiangsu Province, especially for vocational education institutions and colleges. 

Director-General Shen Jian introduced the current situation of economic, social and educational development in Jiangsu Province. He mentioned that Jiangsu had increased education exchanges and cooperation with ASEAN countries, and put forward the suggestions, for instance, to further improve Jiangsu-ASEAN education cooperation mechanism, to build a good platform for vocational education cooperation, and to further promote the Jiangsu-ASEAN two-way communication between teachers and students. In good faith and friendly relations, and upholding the principle of cooperative and win-win purpose, Jiangsu and ASEAN could jointly promote the education exchange and cooperation to a higher level.

The dialogue was co-hosted by Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, ACC and SEAMEO. During the same period of time, Jiangsu-ASEAN Dialogue for School Principals, Dialogue between Jiangsu Vocational Institutes and ASEAN Principals, ASEAN Young Ambassadors Touring Jiangsu and relevant activities were also held. 50 principals and 88 students from 8 ASEAN countries, and students of colleges and universities from Jiangsu province also participated in the activities.
