ACC Attending the 8th Word Chinese Economic Summit

On 16-17 November 2016, the 8th World Chinese Economic Summit (WCES), with the theme of “China-ASEAN: Realizing Opportunities, Strengthening Partnerships” was held in Melaka, Malaysia. The summit was organized by the Asian Strategic & Leadership Institute (ASLI) and the Government of Melaka State, and co-hosted by Center for China & Globalization (CCG) and Center for Law and Globalization of Renmin University of China (RUC). Government officials, former heads of states and governments, think tanks, scholars and representatives of business community from Malaysia, China, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, Pakistan, Switzerland, United Kingdom, the United States, and so on, altogether more than 600 people from over 20 countries and regions participated in the summit. Upon invitation of ASLI, ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) sent its representatives from Trade and Investment Division to attend the event.  

At the opening ceremony, The Hon. Dr. Wee Ka Siong, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department of Malaysia, The Hon. Mah Siew Keon, Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities of Malaysia, H.E. Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Former President of Indonesia, and the Hon. Idris, Chief Minister of Melaka State of Malaysia rendered their speeches respectively. During the Speakers Session, The Hon. Ong Ka Chuan, Second Minister of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia, H.E. Professor Dr. Surakiart Sathirathai, Chairman of Asian Peace and Reconciliation Council (APRC) and Former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, H.E. Mr. Shaukat Aziz, Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, and The Hon. Kevin Rudd, Former Prime Minister of Australia, delivered their keynote remarks. 11 roundtable meetings and seminars were held during the 2-day summit. Participants exchanged their views on taking the opportunities of 25th anniversary of ASEAN-China dialogue relations as well as the Belt and Road Initiative, and further strengthening ASEAN-China cooperation in the area of economy and trade.
